History of the Wilbarger County Sheriff Department

Long respected as the county's top lawman, the sheriff has a range of duties that include criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, operation of the jail and other responsibilities. Duties of the sheriff include: Providing security for the operation of county and district courts; Enforcing traffic laws, other county ordinances and other state laws; Service of process; Accepting bail for prisoners in his custody; Conducting sales of seized and unclaimed properties; and Taking charge of and responsibility for the county jail and prisoners.

The Wilbarger County Sheriff's Department has been active since 1881.  During those 115 years, there have only been 23 sheriffs.  Twenty two of these men are deceased.


An excerpt from the Texas State Historical Association:

The office of sheriff has been provided for under every Texas constitution and supersedes the alguacil of Spanish and Mexican rule. The Constitution of 1876 provided that a sheriff be elected biennially in each county; the term of office was lengthened to four years by a constitutional amendment in 1954. The main duties of the sheriff are to act as a conservator of the peace and the executive officer of the county and district courts, serve writs and processes of the courts, seize property after judgment, enforce traffic laws on county roads, and supervise the county jail and prisoners. In counties of fewer than 10,000 residents he may also serve as ex officio tax assessor and collector.
